NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation

 Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training — is the NRA’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for new purchasers.
 

Course Description

FIRST (
Firearm Instruction, Responsibility, and Safety Training) Steps” is a program the NRA developed to provide firearms orientation for new gun purchasers and users. This FIRST Steps program is a basic course that focuses on the most fundamental shooting for a particular model of pistol. It provides a hands-on orientation to a particular pistol and can be completed in as little as three hours.

Students will receive the NRA's The Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook with quick practical lessons on the safe use, cleaning, and storage of their pistol. Students will participate in a supervised practical exercise for a single pistol shooting position. Actual length of the scheduled course many vary depending on number of course participants and types of pistol covered.

Course Goal

“To provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the
knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to own and use a specific pistol model safely.”

Lessons covered in meeting this course goal include:

1. Introduction to Pistol Safety, Parts, and Operation
2. Introduction to Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
3. Introduction to Pistol Shooting
4. Introduction to Pistol Cleaning, Storage, and Training Opportunities


Prerequisites

There are
no prerequisites for taking this course. The material is accessible to appropriately supervised mature children and adults. 16 Years and Older.

Course Completion

Students will receive feedback on the
supervised live-fire exercise and a course certificate upon successful completion of the lessons. Students will receive a “Basic Practical” rocker (arm patch) upon successful demonstration of firing a qualifying “group”.

NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, FIRST Steps Course completion certificate.

A National Rifle Association course. Offered to new shooters who own, plan to own or are just plain interested about handguns. The NRA FIRST Steps Pistol is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific pistol action type for classes of four or fewer students. This course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific pistol action type. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; the particular pistol model parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development.

Range Fees

     Please note: The course tuition does not include range fees. Gun usage however will be provided!. Ear & eye protection, Range fees and ammunition costs will vary. After completing the classroom section of the course, students will drive to a nearby suburban range to complete the live-fire section of this course AT A LATER DATE.

     There are no public ranges in the City of Chicago. Upon completion of the classroom portion of the course, students will travel to a designated range in the north/western suburbs (determined by date of the class) for the live-fire portion of the course. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the range facility. The range facility is a public range, and other shooters will also be using the range. It is important that the student listen carefully to the instructions given by the instructor(s) and range safety officers. Any individual that engages in unsafe behavior or refuses to listen to the staff instructor(s) will immediately be ejected from the range and the course.  No refund will be issued.

CLASS PREPARATION

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class.
     

  • Bring a notepad and a pen or pencil.
     

  • Please wear comfortable clothing.
     

  • If you are attending a shooting class, you must wear closed toed shoes on the range. 
     

  • Eye and ear protection are required on the range. If you don't bring your own, we will proivide them at the range.
     

  • Prior to start of class, please turn off or place cell phones on vibrate.
     

  • Drinks and snacks are allowed.
     

  • You should plan on being in class for the full time posted in the course description. Some classes may run longer than estimated depending on student performance.
     

  • There are no firearms or live ammunition allowed in the class room.
     

  • If you are attending a shooting course, you can  bring your own firearm and at least 50 rounds of target ammunition to the range. If you do not have a firearm, one will be provided to you. Some ranges may have ammunition available for purchase, but it is a good idea to bring your own.
     

  • If you are attending the Pistol Shooting course or First Steps Pistol class, a pistol can be provided for free.
     

  • Plan on having a great safe time.
